Class, what should we do before, AFTER AND DURING an earthquake?

BEFORE, AFTER AND DURING AN EARTHQUAKE YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE STEPS THAT I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU.

* Create an earthquake readiness plan within your household and come up with a meet-up point for your family.

*Practice dropping down and taking cover so that it comes naturally to you when an earthquake strikes.

*Be prepared with an earthquake kit. The kit should have water, food, medications, a first aid kit, flashlight, batteries, radio, thermal blankets and other personal items which will last for 72 hours

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE..

If your inside your house or a building...

*DROP to the ground; Take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn't a table or desk near you, cover your head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of your house or the building

*Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE...

*Don't run outside your house or building, unless you're near the door. It's better if you go up rather that going down.

*Don't panic or shout, that will only create a bigger risk for getting hit by flying objects, crushed by debris or falling over

*If you are in a wheelchair, lock the wheels and protect the back of your head and neck.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE...

*Place a HELP sign in your window if you need assistance.

*If you are on a bus, stay in your seat until the bus stops. Take cover in a protected place. If you can't take cover, sit in a crouched position and protect your head from falling debris.

Things we need to avoid during an earthquake...

*Doorways. Doors may slam shut and cause injuries.

*Windows, bookcases, tall furniture and light fixtures. You could be hurt by shattered glass or heavy objects.

*Elevators. If you are in an elevator during an earthquake, hit the button for every floor and get out as soon as you can.

*Coastline. Earthquakes can trigger large ocean waves called tsunamis.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE...

*Stay calm. Help others if you are able.

*Be prepared for aftershocks.

*Listen to the radio or television for information from authorities. Follow their instructions. Place telephone receivers back in their cradles; only make calls if requiring emergency services.

*Check your home for structural damage and other hazards. If you suspect your home is unsafe, do not re-enter.

*If you have to leave your home, take your emergency kit and other essential items with you.
