Tips for Teaching the Tricky Words

Tricky words got their name as they are words that cannot be sounded out or blended as the children would normally do with new words they meet. They are sometimes referred to as sight words as children learn them by seeing them. Here are a few tricks to help your child remember their tricky words.

1. When we are teaching the tricky words in class we spell the word out using the letter name and not the sound and then say the word. Repeat this process 3 times per word.

o-t-h-e-r other

b-e-c-a-u-s-e because

Ideas to make our words fun

1.    Learning through movement is very good. Have your child do jumping jacks while looking at the tricky word and spelling it out loud or throw a ball in the air while you spell it. Remember to have them say the word once they have spelt it.

2.    Write the words on a sheet of paper and pop them up somewhere that is easily visible for your child. Call out words at different times in the day and have your child point to them.

3.    Place a word on a piece of paper in each corner of a room. Have you child go to the corner that a particular word is in or have them choose a corner and read the word they find out loud.

4. Have your child put the word into a sentence orally or they could use it when writing their News.

5.    Once your child knows the word and can simple read it as a sight word there is no need to keep spelling it out.
