Courtown
The name Courtown can be traced back to 1278 when Andrew Avenal had a lease of The Manor of Curtun in Kinelahun (Kiltennel). This property previously belonged to Christinia de Marisco but had been transferred to the Crown. The Manor of Courtown formed portion of MacDamores territory.
During the 18th and 19th centuries it was home to the seat of Lord Courtown. Courtown house was demolished in 1962 and all that remains is it s private church and cemetery. Today it is home to Courtown Golf Club and Kiltennel Church.

Courtown is a village which developed after Lord Courtown ordered the construction of a harbour during the famine years 1839-1846.
This eventually led to a small village being developed with fishing being its primary economy. In the late 20th and early 21st century significant urbanisation has taken place especially in Riverchapel just south of Courtown.
