Why We Chose Blindness:

We chose to research blindness in order to gain a better understanding of what blindness is and the experience of people who are blind. We think that it is important for us to be educated on blindness so that we can be more inclusive in our own classrooms. Additionally, we think that it is important to gain understanding of what it is like to be blind through insider perspectives. We hope to gain knowledge, resources, and books recommendations that we can incorporate in our classrooms and share with other educators.

Chapter 4: The Literacy Cast Proclamation
We believe that children deserve books that:
  • include accurate and authentic representations of disability
  • include at least two characters with disabilities
  • are authored and illustrated by people with lived disability experiences
  • are historically accurate
  • are written using inclusive and current language that [dismantles ableism]
  • Avoid [and dismantle] stereotypes including the need to cure or overcome disabilities
  • acknowledge [and respect] the power of individuals

Specifically, we believe that children need books that allow everyone to speak their own truths, create their own stories, and challenge limits set by society.

We must not let anyone's mind limit what able hearts can do.

Justification: The Literacy Cast Proclamation is relevant to all teachers who are selecting children's literature to use in their classrooms. All elements of this proclamation are important to remember when selecting books to ensure that the books we read are inclusive and aren't just telling one story. Children's literature should be mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors for students. If this selection criteria is followed, the books will be windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. Disability justice should be included in all areas of education, and stories should feature authentic and diverse stories of individuals with disabilities. In searching for books about blindness, this proclamation is relevant because it provides guidelines for evaluating literature we can use in our classrooms and feel confident about sharing with our students.
