Chapter 1: Introduction

Topic: Dyslexia

We chose to focus on dyslexia because it is a common disability that many people identify with having. According to a study on dyslexia at Yale, about 20% of the population identifies with having dyslexia. This is a large percentage of people in the world and therefore we desired to learn more about this topic. Additionally, we want to ensure the books we are featuring accurately represent the 20% of people that identify with having dyslexia.

We believe that children deserve books that:} 

• _{(a) Include accurate and authentic representations of disability;} 
• _{(b) Include at least two characters with disabilities;}
• _{(c) Are authored and illustrated by people with lived disability experiences;} 
• _{(d) Are historically accurate;}
• _{(e) Are written using inclusive and current language that [dismantles ableism];} 
• _{(f) Avoid [and dismantle] stereotypes including the need to cure or overcome disabilities;}
• _{(g) Acknowledge [and respect] the power of individuals with disabilities.}

_{Specifically, we believe that children need books that allow everyone to [speak their own truths], create their own stories, and challenge limits set by society.
We must not let anyone’s mind limit what able hearts can do.}
