Chapter 8: Recommendations for Using These Books in the Classroom

Chapter 4: The Literacy-Cast Proclamation

We believe that children deserve books that:&nbsp; <ul><li>(a) Include accurate and authentic representations of disability;&nbsp;</li><li>(b) Include at least two characters with disabilities;</li><li>(c) Are authored and illustrated by people with lived disability experiences;&nbsp;</li><li>(d) Are historically accurate;</li><li>(e) Are written using inclusive and current language that dismantles ableism;&nbsp;</li><li>(f) Avoid and dismantle stereotypes including the need to cure or overcome disabilities;</li><li>(g) Acknowledge and respect the power of individuals with disabilities.</li></ul> Specifically, we believe that children need books that allow everyone to speak their own truths, create their own stories, and challenge limits set by society. We must not let anyone’s mind limit what able hearts can do.

Justification: We believe that the Literacy-Cast Proclamation is relevant because there are many people with disabilities who are looked at by the public at large for what they can't do. We feel that by choosing books that meet the requirements of our proclamation, we can educate others about disabilities and in doing so, can demonstrate what people with disabilities can do.

In conclusion, we learned that there are numerous books available to share about autism, but many of them do not meet all of the standards in our proclamation.  It is evident that more literary representation of autism is needed by persons who have been diagnosed with autism or who have a lived experience with someone who has the diagnosis.  We also feel that it is necessary in these books that the person with autism be shown in a positive light where others can recognize the things the CAN do and not focus on the things that cannot be accomplished.

We chose to focus on autism as a disability to research.  We wanted to learn more about autism and possibly educate other people about it. Some of us in Literacy Cast have different ranges and levels of autism and want to learn more about it and how it pertains to ourselves. We also want to be able to help children with autism learn to the best of their ability while honoring their disability. We want to learn how to create a productive learning environment for them.

Jake Nasta is a first year Scholar in the Scholars Of Diverse Abilities Program. He is 18 years old and one of triplets, who also are college students. Jake is a diehard Arizona Cardinals, Nascar Duke Blue Devils, and Arizona Diamondbacks fans. He has Level 2 Autism and uses it as motivation to succeed in life. He educates other people about autism to learners who to learn about more about it. He lives in Waxhaw, North Carolina with his family. 

About: Miss Kristen Jones

	Kristen Jones is a graduate student at Appalachian State University studying Reading Education. She will graduate with her Masters in May of 2024. She graduated from Appalachian State University in May of 2023 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. Kristen is currently working in a Blended Pre-K classroom as a teacher assistant. Some of her favorite things include: iced coffee, watching movies, spending time with her friends, family, and fiancé. She loves working in the education field and can't wait to take on a full time teaching position next school year. She is from Fuquay-Varina, NC.

Marla Cantrell is a graduate student at Appalachian State University studying Reading Education and will earn her Masters degree in May 2024. She graduated from University of NC in Wilmington (UNCW) with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. Marla is currently working at Appalachian State University Academy at Middle Fork as an Interventionist in reading and math for kindergarten and first grade students. Some of her favorite things include: reading, yard work, going to the beach and spending time with her children and five grandchildren. She has been teaching elementary education for thirty-three years. Marla lives in Belews Creek, NC.
