Butterflies are usually solitary creatures. That means they usually are by themselves. Sometimes at night you may see a small group of butterflies together as they settle down to sleep.

I am just fluttering around the meadows and gardens having a sip of nectar. I bring pollen from one flower and plant to others to pollinate them.

You must remember that this amazing transformation is called METAMORPHOSIS. This is another example of how amazing nature is and that we must learn more to preserve it.

How about some interesting information about human babies?

The average baby is born weighing between 6-8 1/2 pounds.

The average baby is born between 19 and 21 inches long.

Babies are born with the love of music. Music can be comforting to a cranky baby and can get them wiggling, too!

I will be up and dancing like Grandma and Grandpa in a few months. 

I think it is pretty safe to say that once a female butterfly has laid her eggs, she goes about her life without worrying about her eggs. Unlike other creatures that must  sit on their eggs to provide warmth, the female butterfly does not.

Butterflies and frogs have a similar life cycle. The female frog lays its eggs, usually in a watery area. The eggs hatch into the second stage called a tadpole. As the tadpole matures, it starts to grow legs and arms. The final adult stage is the transformation into a frog.

Human babies are dependent on other people for all of their care for many years. They need a caring person to feed them, change their diapers, keep them clean and comfortable and safe from danger. Babies and children need help from others well into their teen age years before they can completely take care of themselves. 

You have been busy studying the life cycle of butterflies. You already know that the female butterfly lays her eggs on a leaf. After 3 days, the eggs hatch and are called larva. They are what we know as caterpillars. The caterpillars are very hungry little critters and grow quickly. They eat so many leaves they outgrow their skin!! That process is called moulting. When the time is right, the caterpillars attach themselves to a small branch or twig and begin to form a chrysalis. This stage is called the pupa. Most will stay in the chrysalis for 5 -21 days. When the time is right, the adult butterfly will emerge from the chrysalis, pause for a minute or so and begin to fly. This amazing transformation from egg to butterfly is called metamorphosis.

The human life cycle is a long and complicated one. The average person lives to 78 years of age. They go through many changes during that long lifetime from infancy, childhood, adolescence to adult hood.

When we look at the life cycles of insects,frogs and humans we can see similarities and differences. A human baby needs to be taken care of for many years before he or she can be independent. When a butterfly leaves the chrysalis, it flies off and takes care of its own needs. The same type of thing happens with frogs. Butterflies and frogs have a simple diet that gives them the nutrition they need to live. People have a wide variety of foods that help them to grow. Can you think of other examples? An incredible thing about humans is that they will use their amazing brains to learn how to read, write, solve problems and become scientists! Maybe you will be one someday!

Hi there! I am so glad you are back to learn a little more about insects and what they have in common with other members of the animal kingdom. We will compare the life cycles of butterflies, frogs and humans to see what they have in common and where their life cycles are different.

A baby's stomach is about the size of walnut or a golf ball. No wonder they eat so many times during the day and night!! They also have some activity going on in their diapers every 20 minutes.

Time for a new diaper... It's a good thing I am cute!!

Here are some interesting facts about frogs.

A frog's eyes and nose are on the top of its head. This allows them to see and breathe with just a small part of their heads out of the water.

Adult frogs have long back legs and smaller ones in front that are webbed. This helps them be great swimmers and jumpers.
