The Colossus of Rhodes
By Martín Rodríguez Alonso
The Colossus of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
It represented the god Helios, and was built by Cares de Lindos in 292 B.C. to thank the gods for the victory over Demetrius Poliorcetes' siege of Rhodes.
The Colossus of Rhodes was located in the harbour of the Greek island of Rhodes.
Ruins of the colossus after the earthquake
It only stood 60 years, because a strong earthquake hit Rhodes and the Colossus of Rhodes was broken at its weakest point, the knee.
It was a big male figure. The triumphal statue had a solar ray crown on its head and a torch on its right hand. The base was made of white marble and the figure was made of bronze.
