By Philippe Huneault
A boy was lying down on his bed, waiting for the impending threat. His name was Liam, a 6-year-old boy who had been seeing something that he believed to be mysterious, silent, but mostly dangerous. He didn’t know what it was, as in the darkness of the night when the creature would appear, all he could see was a shadow lurking in the confines of his home. These sightings
happened almost every night. Liam would either see a shadow passing in the hall or a sound from the lower floor. It terrified him. He often questioned himself about the creature. Was it a man, a monster, or the famous boogeyman? What did it want? Was he imagining it? Liam could only ask for help from one person, his mother. Over and over, day after day, he would tell his mother about the monster in the dark, but she didn’t believe him, saying it was all in his imagination. It had gotten to the point that the boy’s mother had started ignoring him altogether. He wanted to get help from his father, but ever since his parent’s divorce a month ago, his mother had not allowed Liam to see his father. She kept saying that the man was delusional, aggressive, and dangerous. The boy didn’t believe her though. To him, his father was his hero. A man who was brave, strong, and would take care of the monster in an instant. Unfortunately, that was not an option. Liam was alone with nobody to help him. As Liam lay in his bed, he couldn’t sleep, or to be more exact, he didn’t want to sleep. The boy was sick of the monster. He wanted to take matters into his own hands. It was time for the creature to leave. So Liam waited, patiently. After 3 hours, he started falling asleep. Slowly, little by little, his eyes started to close, until he heard it. Liam heard a loud thud downstairs as if something fell. It was the monster. He quickly rose out of his bed, determination in his eyes and raced down the stairs, ready to confront the irritating
pest in his home. As soon as Liam arrived on the first floor, he fell in shock. Vomit followed at the horrible sight in front of him. On the ground was his mother, stabbed 12 times in the back. As Liam stared at his mother’s corpse, he noticed someone standing next to her. Knife in hand, it was the real monster in Liam’s life, his father.
