August 13th, 2019, Taylor was finally going to the boardwalk. She’s been waiting all week for this moment, she was in the car with her friends, Betty and Wanda. She turned the music up until her ears felt like they were bleeding. Her Mom glared at her, but she wasn’t phased, at least not today. They wholeheartedly sang, more like screamed, all of the songs that came on, and they continued like this until they got there. The big ferris wheel came into view, behind that were all of the roller coasters Taylor had heard so many crazy stories about.

After they paid for their tickets and convinced Taylor’s mom they’ll be fine on their own, they set out to the awaiting boardwalk. It was even bigger than Taylor thought was possible, Betty decided they should go on one of the roller coasters first, so they got in line and waited.

It was finally their turn, they were measured to make sure they were tall enough.
“I’m sorry, but you’re not tall enough to go on the ride,” the man said, pointing at Wanda. She had always been short for her age, and she didn’t want her height to ruin her friends time.

“You can go on without me, I’ll wait down here and the next ride we can all hopefully go on together,” Wanda told them. After a little while of arguing back and forth, they finally gave in and went on the ride. The roller coaster was creeping up to the top, after a minute or two they got there and Taylor made the mistake of looking down. She swallowed and closed her eyes hoping that would seize her fear, she was wrong. The roller coaster zoomed down, her and Betty screamed, while Wanda was trying to stifle a laugh. After what seemed like forever the roller coaster came to a halt.

After a few more rides that Wanda could actually go on, and a stop to get funnel cake. Their trip was coming to an end. The sun was about to set and Taylor’s mom told her they should be back before dark, so they decided to go to the end of the pier and watch the sunset They approached the end of the pier, Taylor and Wanda sat down on the edge of the pier, but Betty had a better idea.

“We should go down to the beach,” Betty announced.

“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea…” Taylor argued.

“Oh come on, it’s only a little jump, what could possibly go wrong?” Betty questioned. Taylor and Wanda agreed, despite the feeling in Taylor’s stomach that told her she shouldn’t go. They all decided to go at the same time, they were going to jump onto the soft sand in 3...2...1… and then they jumped. What Taylor didn’t realize was that it wasn’t soft sand below her it was actually a hard rock that was much further down than she realized.
She hit the rock and before she knew it her feet slipped and she hit her head, while Betty and Wanda hit the sand. They looked at each other with pure fear in their eyes. Taylor knew she had to stay awake despite the very welcoming darkness that was surrounding her. Wanda called Taylor’s mom while Betty called for an ambulance.

The ambulance arrived quickly assuming someone would get injured at the amusement park that night. They took Taylor and left Wanda and Betty with Taylor’s mom. By this point Taylor knew she had given into the darkness, she wasn’t strong enough to fight it. All she thought about was the times she held a grudge against her family and how she might not get a chance to make it right.

Taylor’s eyes shot open and bright lights surrounded her, she’s pretty sure she heard someone yell ‘she’s up!’ but everything was a blur, it felt like it was all in slow motion. Her mother had been crying, but there was a look of relief on her face when she saw Taylor. Taylor glanced at the clock that said 8:13.

The doctors told her it was okay to leave after a few days, and so they did. They were in the car, driving in silence this time, and she smiled brightly at her mom, thankful for her second chance.
