Be nice to the goose. Let it lay its golden eggs. If you go looking for more, you’ll lose the goose and its eggs. But greed isn’t the only motivation for opening the goose, so pay attention younglings, for I have a story to tell. The story of a man who killed the geese, the unicorns and the dragons. He didn’t want their power for himself, but for everyone else. His heart was in the right place, but his head was not.
He was a strong person, though he didn’t bear any muscles. For his power came from his heart and the magic he possessed. And this gift he had, he used with his heart. He built houses, healed wounds... did anything he could to make his magic useful to the people around him. Though he did have his limits, and he hated that. No, it wasn’t for himself he wanted the power, but to build bigger houses and to heal greater wounds. He liked to help and wanted to do it better. So he turned to a greater power.
The griffins, the unicorns, the dragons… what made them so powerful? He needed to know. He had to find out. He thought he would find a way to make the greatest of mansions and revive the dead. And so he captured the magical creatures of the world and experimented, again and again. The beasts went through great pain and suffering he could not comprehend, and so he kept going, convinced there was a way these beasts could help him help more than he had ever before. And so he made more experiments and the beasts started dying. He needed more... he captured more. More, more and more beasts fell into his clutch until they became extremely rare. And all the while, he kept experimenting, brewing, dissecting… all without coming up with anything.
And then came the day he couldn’t find any more beasts. No matter where his portals led him, no matter how much he searched for their magical energy, he couldn’t find any more. He came home to a dying unicorn, the last magical beast, and realized what he had done during all those years of research. He had been searching for power he could not grasp, for a secret that did not exist. And while trying to save the world, he robbed it of something precious.
While he had always possessed great knowledge, only then did he gain the wisdom to see what horrors he had committed... to feel the guilt that he should have felt long ago. He had gained enough wisdom to value these creatures’ lives, but not enough to spare his own. And, with him, the last bit of magic left our world.
