Skeleton
It was Halloween season and Karla, a 17-year-old girl, wanted to go visit her family in Mexico to celebrate The Day Of The Dead. This was new to her. She had never done such a thing before, with all the decorations, the colour, the candles, the Mexican food etc. She had already celebrated with her family here in Canada, but she had never done it the ‘’real way’’.

November 1st, the day of the dead. Karla was so excited for this day. She could finally see what it’s really about. Karla and her family sat around a table and started to sing with their eyes closed. This was a ritual that had to be done for every family. Families do this to welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion. About 10 minutes later, she heard voices, voices that were not human. She opened her eyes and looked around. She saw something, something she will never forget. She was shaking and stood there immobilized. They were skeletons, some dressed like humans and some were bare. She then stood up and started walking away with a frightened look on her face.

Suddenly, after going around the main plaza a couple of times, she stumbled upon what seemed to be a lonely, yet kind, skeleton. She froze at his sight until the skeleton invited her to follow him using body language. Making her way towards the skeleton, without losing sight of him, she tripped and hit her head unconscious. Momentarily waking up, confused with no sense of time, Karla found herself falling into a never-ending void surrounded by memories and vivid images of encounters she had all throughout her short life. Regretting having followed the skeleton, she sheds a tear and says her goodbyes to her Mama. She has now become part of this festive day, so much more then she had originally anticipated or hoped for, a little too much...
