We open on a vast expanse of inky void. Radiant flecks of light speckle our view, almost too bright to look at yet impossibly out of reach. This immeasurable stretch of nothingness is our setting. Space… the Final Frontier, don’t worry I’ll keep the sci-fi references to a minimum we don’t have time for that. To any onlooker, it would seem that this abyss is devoid, but scrutinize enough and you’ll spot a lonely spaceship. This vessel houses many things, but few of them live. The ship, named the Tranquility, was home to one of the most unique collections in the cosmos. It was full of Terran music. Through the evolution of humanity and its escape from the planet Earth, society lost many of its art forms, including music. This collection of hard drives, vinyl records, cassettes and many more was kept safe by its owner, a man by the name of Rigby, simply because he didn’t have anything else to keep. With no family, no friends, and certainly no planetary home, music was the only thing to keep Rigby sane. On top of that, now and then, foreign entities, extraterrestrial more often than not, would come to visit to admire this sublime collection. Rigby was rarely capable of communicating with them, but in this case, he’d just play a few records and words became completely unnecessary.

One morning, he awoke to see a large space ship stationed next to his, their hatches had already been connected. A woman had boarded his ship, rather rudely he thought, but after a long confrontation, he had abandoned all his grievances. The woman, named Dolby, had come to share their common interest, for she too had a legendary collection, although hers was comprised of musical instruments. Thus, Rigby and Dolby went on to travel through the universe compelled by a love for music and each other. Their days were filled with discussions, enjoying albums and jam sessions. For nearly the rest of their lives, the couple explored galaxies and went on journeys too wonderful to recount in so little time. But it couldn’t last forever. Even before their shared odyssey, the Tranquility was getting old and unreliable. Eventually, its movement systems shut down and at a completely inopportune time. The Tranquility was approaching an undiscovered black hole when it became victim to the forces of the cosmos. They intended to get close enough to observe the black hole whilst using the engine thrust to stay out of its gravitational pull, which was of course impossible with a dead engine. They panicked briefly but soon came to realize there was nothing they could do. No other spaceship could help them out of the insane pull of the black hole, let alone find them first. As they sped toward the event horizon, they played “Didn’t You Hear" by Mort Garson and looked back on their now mythical lives. Time seemed to stretch immeasurably whilst they recounted past events and stared up into the sea of writhing luminescence. In an instant, the stars started contorting around the Tranquility and they came to stare through the cockpit window at a sight completely indescribable.
