I lay out in the night, on my back in the soft, green grass, I waited patiently for the promised comet to fly through the sky. I was alone, but my parents were inside through the sliding door in the living room, watching some show for people their age. I decided to come outside because I finished my homework before 9 o’clock, and the science teachers had been raving about this shooting star. Every time I passed one of them in the hallway they would say, “Don’t forget to go outside tonight!” or “It's going to be amazing!” Whether it was amazing or not, I really just needed some alone time.

No stress.

No yelling.

Quiet.

Well, I guess it wasn’t really “quiet,” but I didn’t mind the sound of my breath or the crickets chirping. I was more focused on all the tiny white dots on the solid black canvas above me.

At 9:30, the comet passed over as fast as a flash of light, but for me it was as if the world came to slow motion. It arched in the sky, and I remembered you were supposed to make a wish when you saw a shooting star. It peaked and began falling, leaving a faint trail of light behind it. I thought about everything: I wish life could be easy. I wish it was as easy to be kind as it is to say “Be Kind”. I wish we could all be accepted for who we are. I wish people weren't so judgemental. I wish we weren’t violent for no reason. I wish….that I could savor this moment forever. The star had vanished before I knew it.

I went back to staring at the darkness. I had never thought of these hopes and dreams before. It just happened to come over me how unperfect our world is, but how much it could be improved if we all tried.

At 9:45, I went inside realizing that I hadn’t finished my work. Our work is never done. There is always more we can do to help and improve our world.
