The old ladies were having tea again, and children were not allowed. Being barely eleven years old, Isabella was told not to be too loud and keep out of sight.
“What am I supposed to do then?” Asked Isabella.
“Do?” scoffed Aunt Lucinda. “Good riddance, what a silly question! I don’t care what you do at all as long as you don’t make a mess.”
Isabella thought it was not a silly question at all. 1297 Flynn Street was not a place for children. White furniture, breakable things in every room. It was obvious that Aunt Lucinda never had children nor cared for them at all.
When the old ladies in hats and scarves came in, Isabella went upstairs. She wandered into each and every hallway, finding new trinkets along the way. Once, she found an old chess set but had nobody to play with, as there were no other children that lived in the neighborhood.
Isabella wandered into a new hallway she’d never seen before.
“Squeeeeeeeeeak!” Came a sound.
Isabella tiptoed toward it.
“Squeeeeeeeeeak!” This time the sound came from under her foot. Isabella bounced up and down and suddenly, her foot sunk into the floor and the other end of the floorboard came up. She crouched down and jammed her fingers under the board. A secret hiding place! Maybe Aunt Lucinda had a stash of jewels! Or, perhaps a treasure map!
As she lifted up the board, something fluttered across her face. Isabella screamed and swatted at the thing. She’d let a bird into the room!
“You called for me?” Said a small voice.
Isabella screamed again and promptly fell on the floor with a loud thunk.
“WHAT THE HECK?! THE THING CAN TALK!” Isabella shrieked.
“Of course I can talk! You humans aren’t very bright are you?”
“W-what are you?” Isabella asked.
“A fairy, silly!”
“What?! No you’re not! Fairies aren’t real!”
“And goblins aren’t real either,” The Fairy said sarcastically.
“Ok, so you’re saying that you’re a fairy. Does that mean you can do magic?!”
“Well obviously. For starters, I can change your hair color.”
The fairy flew up and brushed her wing tips together so that a little fairy dust spilled over Isabella’s head. Isabella felt her scalp itch a little but it was gone the moment it arrived.
“Done!” Said the fairy. “Your hair looks so much better now!”
Isabella walked over to the mirror. Her hair down to the tips was cherry red!
The fairy drifted back down onto the bed and put her chin in her tiny hands.
“So why have you summoned me?” The fairy asked a little sadly. “I’m starting to feel like you don’t really want me here.”
“Oh! I’m sorry, I really do want you here! Ever since I’ve come to live at Aunt Lucinda’s, I’ve been sooo bored with no one to talk or play with at all.”
“I haven’t had anyone to talk to either. There are no other fairies here, you know,” The fairy sniffed.
“Perhaps, I summoned you to be my friend.”
“Your friend?” The fairy said excitedly.
“Yes, and I could be yours too!” Isabella laughed.
Having a fairy friend was going to be so much fun!
