I shouldn't have come here. I shouldn't have listened to Kaya and joined her on this hiking trip. “Chris, come on, it’s going to be fun. I’ve gone here before so there’s no way we’ll get lost." Barely 30 minutes in, we were lost in the middle of a forest as it was starting to turn dark. What a fun idea for a trip! While I was sulking like a frustrated 13-year-old, Kaya set up our tents, our beds and a campfire by herself. I was so exhausted. I rushed into the tent, collapsed in my bed, and could feel my consciousness fading away.

I woke up in the middle of the night to a voice calling out to me. Was it Kaya? “Hey Chris? Come on, wake up." Her voice sounded a bit distorted, probably since she was talking to me from outside the tent. I went out to see her, but she was nowhere to be found. “Hey Chris, come on, follow me”. I couldn't see her, but I followed her voice. Looking back, I saw that we were getting further and further away from the camp. What could she possibly need from me out here? Her voice suddenly stopped. There was no noise, no sound of grass rustling, no cicadas buzzing. Nothing. I looked around and couldn't see Kaya anywhere. Oh, there she was! I vaguely saw her silhouette.

No, wait a minute, did she always look like this? My eyes were starting to adjust to the dark, and with every passing moment, the silhouette appeared more and more bizarre. Every little detail about it became more apparent, and the thing I once believed to be my friend started looking more like a grotesque caricature of a human. Despite this, it still spoke with Kaya’s voice. I felt disgusted. I tried to leave slowly, without making any sudden movements, but as soon as I thought I was safe, it dashed towards me and pinned me to the ground. I tried screaming for help, but it was all in vain. We were too far from camp for Kaya to even hear. The creature wrapped its skeletal hands around my neck, my voice growing fainter with every passing moment. I couldn’t breathe, I was so tired, and eventually, I collapsed.
