Core Memories

I watched as my mom curled her hair with a long purple dress on, a habit she didn’t normally do. My mom wasn't an expert, and that was one of the only times I’ve seen her curl her hair, she usually wore it straight. I only remember she curled it because there is a picture of us on that day. I remember walking through the hotel room, thinking to myself, my mom is getting married! I don’t know why I came to that conclusion, maybe I heard the word wedding, because we were at my Aunt’s wedding. That must have happened. I must have heard the word wedding then saw my mom wear a dress, my little two year old brain connected the dots to, Mom is getting married. I only remember a split thought of that day, not the flashy lights of the actual wedding but me walking around the hotel thinking irrational thoughts.

I only remember the color and the details because there was a picture to jog my memory, not from my own mind; I don’t have super memory. People say that we remember things that changed us, had a huge impact on us or helped us learn a lesson. I can’t figure out why this is one of my core memories. In the beginning, I didn’t think that it had a huge impact on me, but when I really tried to analyze it, I came to some conclusions. Maybe it’s telling me that the little things are also important too. Not just the center of the show (in this example it would be the wedding), but also preparations that went into it to make it the centerpiece.
