The ring of the church bells, the loud silence of the night, the smell of blood and the taste of my salty sweat made me dizzy. My senses were overloaded, I had never known fear until this very moment. Cops all around me were asking me questions about what had happened, and my mind was throbbing. Slowly, I drifted back into my subconscious.

My mind flashed back to the fall of 2019, a week ago.

“Honey I am home! You’ll never believe what happened at work today!”
My dad had just walked in, and I looked up at him. His eyes were lit with the same excitement he had whenever he unravelled a complicated case, so I knew that he was going to share some big news.
“ I am not supposed to tell anyone this yet, but I finally got a lead on the mafia’s headquarters,” he lowered his voice. “Turns out, that there are five leaders, all brothers, that are running the drug scandal. As you know, I found four of them already, but I think we finally got a lead on the fourth one! His name’s Charlie Gardner, and he’s disguised right now, but we might have a chance of finding him if we can track his car’s license plate down. ”
When my dad told me news like this, I always acted ecstatic for him. Truth was, I was always scared for him. Whenever he got a tip like this, he would never stop, not even if his LIFE was on the line. I guess that’s the downside of being a private investigator’s daughter.
“That’s great dad!” I said masking my fear, “ I’m sure you’ll find them in no time, and this case can finally be over”

I was shaken awake by a man about six ft tall, will long black hair that fell over his shoulders.

His eyes, possessed a look of pity. On his white coat, the nametag Dr. Bryer stood out to me.
“Miss! Are you okay?”
“Where am I?” I asked
The man told me I was in the hospital. I had been in a car crash, it was a hit and run. He said that I was lucky to be alive, although I might suffer some memory loss later on. The information was so overwhelming, that all I could do was nod. I mustered up the courage to ask one question, though I knew I wouldn’t like the answer.
 “ Where is my dad?”
The man looked at me, straight in the eyes and told me “ I’m sorry Miss. He escaped from the accident, and no one could find him. He was just gone when the cops got there.”
The breath sucked out of me. I nodded once again, as a tear fell down my cheek. “Gone”. The word had an indefinite amount of meanings. He could be bleeding to death as I laid here in a hospital bed, but he could also be alive, taking a bus to a friends to get help for himself. For the sake of my sanity, I chose to believe the latter.
The man looked at me once again, “I’ll leave you alone for a moment to get your bearings, your family is on the way.”
As the man left, one tear turned into a hundred, all pouring down my cheeks. Suddenly, I remembered what my father had told me a week ago. The investigation, hit and run, my father now declared missing...it couldn’t have been an ordinary car crash. It had to be something else, but what, I didn't know.
