Miracle
There was a small squeak. I heard it again. I turned on the lights and got out of bed. The squeak kept going. I followed the soft noise. Soon, I found myself standing outside. It was cold and raining. There was a little sound of scraping against wood. I looked under the porch. Oh! There was something snowy white trapped under the low porch. I went back inside and grabbed a flashlight. It was a small kitten! It must be stuck in the tight space under the porch. I kneeled down on the wet grass and reached my hands out. Almost there… Got it! I pulled the kitten out and brought her inside. I dried her with a towel and wrapped her in a warm fuzzy blanket. Then I went to the fridge and got some tuna for her. Miracle, I thought. She was a little miracle in my life. I got out a tiny bowl and put the tuna in it. I looked around the house and found a little basket. I grabbed Miracle, the basket, and the bowl of tuna, and brought them upstairs to my room. I put the basket in the corner of my room next to my bed. I put the bowl and Miracle inside the basket. I watched her eat all the tuna, then I used the same bowl and filled it with water. Miracle drank about half of it. I smiled at her. I changed out of my soggy PJ’s and put on new dry ones. Then I went to bed, my mind on Miracle. I woke up the next morning. I walked to Miracle’s basket. It was empty. I panicked.
“Jazmine!” My mother called out cheerfully, “There’s a white kitten on the table. Did you bring her in last night?” I smiled, relief washing over me. Mom and Dad knew I rescued animals all the time. We always found a home for them.
“Yes, Mama! Her name’s Miracle!” I called back to her. I got dressed and ran downstairs. I picked Miracle up. Papa came downstairs at that time.
“Papa, Mama. I actually want to keep Miracle this time. Can I?” Mama and Papa looked at each other, then nodded.
“Yes,” Papa said, “You’re always rescuing animals and finding the perfect home for them. You never get to keep them, even though you always want to. If you feel that Miracle is right for you, then yes. But only Miracle, the other animals have to find a different home.”
“Yes! Thanks, Mama! Thanks, Papa!” From then on, Miracle and I have always been the perfect match. We rescue animals together. It feels great to have a little miracle always by your side.
