The vixen slipped through the trees, the snow rustling under-paw. Her deep red coat bright against the snow. The blackness deepened. Stars shone like little white fires lit in the sky. The full moon looked like a silver eye come to watch over the sleeping. Stealthily the she-fox padded towards a small hole under a bush. She was a young fox to be alone, but a group of foxes had raided her home and killed her family. She lived alone now, striving to find food and only just managing to survive. She had taken refuge in an old unused hole that protected her from the wind and rain. Tonight she had caught no kill much to her bellies protest. She knew she had to move. Tomorrow she would look for another hole or something with better kill. she slunk inside, savouring the warmth. she curled up and fell into an uneasy sleep. She woke at the crack of dawn, sprang up and trotted outside. Then she walked and walked, she went on for the day and night. on the morning of the second day she collapsed with exhaustion. Suddenly she smelt something wrong. an unfamiliar fox was coming this way. He stank. she got up swaying unsteadly suddenly she saw him. A big fox with teeth gleaming. He pounced snarling at me, I dodged, just. He spun round as fast as lightning. "you're a dead fox. cub" he spat before launching himself at me. I tried to dodge again but was too slow. he landed on me. His claws bit into me. he was about to kill me when a noise behind him caught his attention. A vixen stood behind him. "leave her" she growled. Her voice was strong and powerful. He took one look at her and let go of me. I cowered while he turned tail and ran. "Thank you" I stammered. "your welcome. where are your parents?" "dead" I said without feeling. "I am looking for a home." "well you are young and you don't seem like a liar. Then she said it. "you can come live with me if you like?" I gaped. "really? yes!". so I walked home with a strange vixen and lived with her for the rest of my days.
