The sun blazed down on the desert. No water in sight, not even a drip in the sandy dried up river. A dog walked silently in the heat, his head low. His face was scarred and he was very skinny. Even though he was extremly tired, hungry, and thirsty, he could not rest. He feared that if he did he would be haunted by the spirits of the desert, even when he died the spirits would haunt him.
For the first time all day the dog lifted his head and he saw light, not the cold moonlight but the warm light of windows and street lights, he also realized that he was no longer walking on sand but soft, cool dirt. Energy rushed into him and he ran as fast as his tired legs could take him toward the city.
He was now running happily on the side walks of the town. As he was joyfully looking around he realized how tired he felt but this time instead of ignoring it he sighed happily and fell asleep in a dark but comforting ally.
When he woke he saw a little girl looking at him with curios eyes. The dog wasn't sure what to think of the girl and hesitated to go any closer. He decided it was worth a try. Cautiously he crept forward. The girl picked him up, petting him lovingly. And for the first time in his life, the dog felt at home.
