Celebrations and traditionsThe tradition in the United States and Canada is to give thanks for good times and to gather the family together for the celebratory dinner, which includes pumpkin, apple and pecan pies, cookies, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and turkey.
In addition, Thanksgiving is celebrated through meetings, masses, prayers, and parades. The Macy's store parade is the largest parade station in the world on Thanksgiving Day. The parade is called Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and has been held in New York City since 1924.

Origin of the Date
In the 16th century, in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, in an area called New England, the residents held a feast to celebrate that year's harvest. This was because they experienced a very harsh winter.
Starting in 1620, after very bad weather, pilgrims settled in this village to celebrate the harvest.
In 1621, to give thanks again for the harvest, the village governor organized an "autumn meeting" between the British settlers and the Native Americans. The event included various dishes of corn, fish, duck and turkey.
Since then, the feast has become a tradition in the United States and Canada. Other countries that celebrate Thanksgiving Day are: Grenada (Caribbean), Liberia (Africa), Norfolk Island (Australia) and the Netherlands (Europe).
