A nice family of four lived in a small town in Canada. They seemed like a happy family from the outside, but from the inside, they all had some complicated issues. However, they would never talk about it between them.
On a Thursday afternoon, 16-year-old Lily stopped at the drug store while she came back from school. She rushed home, locked herself in the bathroom, peed on a stick and waited, waited for what seemed like forever. She checked, the dreaded pink + sign stared back at her, she was indeed pregnant. The only plan she had thought of in these first few moments was to leave her house because she didn’t know how her parents would react. They were not at all the kind of people to discuss their problems. They were taught to handle them on their own from a very young age. At dinner time, she was not acting like herself, she wasn’t eating nor talking, so her mom proceeded to ask if she had a good day, but Lily just nodded.
Later that evening, she was discreetly packing her bags so that no one could hear her. However, her mother barged into her room and didn’t understand what her daughter was doing. Lily was so nervous about the whole situation and she couldn’t hold it in anymore. It was too much for her to handle on her own, so she finally decided to tell her parents that she was pregnant… They were utterly shocked and frankly disappointed. Lily started crying because this was exactly the reaction she thought was going to happen, so she was panicking. Still in a state of shock, they wrapped their arms around her and held her for a long time. She didn’t quite understand what was happening, but she cherished the moment for as long as she could. When they finally let go of her, they started talking together for a while, which they never do. They told their daughter that even if they were a bit disappointed with the whole situation, they were very grateful that she opened up to them because it was so rare. Finally, they discussed a plan all together about the baby and she felt extremely relieved. Even if her parents were not jolly about the news, Lily understood that to keep a healthy relationship with the people you love, you need to communicate with them, especially in the tough, scary times.
