What are originality reports?

Originality reports are a learning tool that helps students and instructors review and analyze their work to make sure it is properly cited and to avoid unintentional plagiarism. Originality reports can be used through Classroom or Assignments in Schoology.

You and your students can use originality reports to check work for authenticity. When you run a report, it compares a student’s Google Docs file against webpages and books on the internet. The report links to detected sources and flags uncited text.

How to Set up Originality Reports as a teacher

Turn on originality reports when you create an assignment
1. On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
2. Click the class > Classroom.
3. Click Create > Assignment.
4. Check the Check plagiarism (originality) box.

Turn on originality reports after getting student work
If you turn on originality reports after a student submits their work, the student can't run a report until you return their work. To let students run a report, return their work and allow them to resubmit their assignment.
1. On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
2. Click the class > Classwork.
3. Next to the assignment, click More (three dots) > Edit.
4. Check the Check plagiarism (originality) box.

How to Review Originality Reports as a teacher

Review an originality report
When students turn in their work, Classroom automatically runs an originality report for each submitted Docs file, visible only to you. If a student unsubmits and resubmits an assignment, Classroom runs another originality report for the teacher.
On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
Click the class > Classwork.
Click the assignment > View assignment > the student’s file.
On the right, click # flagged passages.

Originality Reports for Students

If Originality Reports are turned on by the teachers when creating an assignment, students will be able to review the originality of their own submission up to three times before turning it in to encourage proper crediting and citation techniques.

To run an Originality Report as a student:

1. On the assignment screen on the right side, add or attach your work

2. Under your attachment, you will see a small box pop up. Click Run next to Originality Report

3. A pop up will inform you how many originality reports you have remaining for this assignment. Click Run again

4. Under your attachment, click on the link "View Originality Report"

5. In the new window, review your assignment for any passages that have been flagged.

6. Click Edit at the bottom of the screen to make changes to your assignment before submitting
