Animals in circuses today - How are they abused? Humans have been entertained by circus animals for hundreds of years. Animal abuse nowadays in the circus is stopping a little but some of them are still abusing their animals. Do you know that when animals are transported to another place they are in a big truck but have a very little space? Circus animals live almost their entire lives chained and in cages. They travel from place to place almost the whole year. They travel in box cars that have no climate control where they have to live with severe weather conditions. They have to do everything in the same place at the same time, including sleep, eat and do their necessities. Sometimes the transport guards have splintered wood and sharp metal pieces that usually hurts the animals. In their natural habitats they have a huge place where they live and they are with animals of the same species, surrounded by an environment that corresponds to them&nbsp;and with their needs. For example, elephants should be living in the Savannah,&nbsp;which has a tropical grassland with warm temperature. They can move freely, and they have their natural food and climate. Circus trainers punish them if they do not do as they say or perform in a certain way.&nbsp;

Once upon a time, there were many animals and Guarani families&nbsp;that lived in harmony in the rainforest in Misiones, in the north of Argentina. More than 400 birds and 70 species of mammals lived there. At that time, the rainforest was a million hectares big. All these trees in the forest protected the land and gave oxygen to the planet. People got what they needed from the rainforest. They hunted for food and also ate from plants and trees. They used wood to build houses. The rainforest worked as an umbrella for the rain and also as a spring, because its roots absorbed the water. In addition, it was the home not only for people, but also for animals like coatis, cougars, jaguars and birds. The herbivores got food from the fruits of the trees, for example, the palm tree. The carnivores hunted other animals.

But about 500 years ago, the Spanish arrived and everything changed. Gradually, more and more people from Europe kept on arriving, and they started to cut down the forest to sell wood to get money, and to use the land for farming.&nbsp; Many years passed&nbsp;and the Europeans kept cutting down the trees in the rainforest, almost destroying it and leaving few trees. Years later there was a jaguar named Mike who was the King of the Rainforest. One day, Mike was lying in his favorite tree when he heard the scary sound of a chainsaw. It was Carlos&nbsp;with the Europeans about to cut down Mike's tree. He would die! He enjoyed living there with the rest of the species. Carlos, a logger, only cared about money and his own self and wanted to cut as many trees as possible. Carlos was the one that had had that idea, he was like the European king of the jungle.

It is important to know that ozone&nbsp;is created near the earth when gases such as vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors and other emissions react with sunlight. This is why smog is worse during the day, when there are more vehicles on the road. It could cause chest pain, coughing, and throat irritation. But when the Ozone gas is high up in the atmosphere, it also protects us from ultraviolet radiation which are invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun. Toxins have burnt away some of these layers making a big hole in it. The ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth is made of two rays called UVA and UVB. It can cause skin damage, aging, melanoma and other types of skin cancer, eyes and immune system problems. Yet again, this is not the last one to mention in the list of toxic gases.&nbsp;

Although increasing numbers of countries have more and more strict regulations to prevent air pollution, there is a lot to do on an individual level. The key to having a healthier life is to adopt measures that do not pollute the air and at the same time start focusing on how to clean the already polluted environment.&nbsp;

Being aware and changing our habits is a great idea to reverse negative actions we have adopted so far. Individual habits can make a big impact although authorities need to take action too.&nbsp;

Both indoor and outdoor actions can be performed in order to reduce future pollution and to start “curing” our planet and ourselves:&nbsp;

Do not take the quality of the air you breathe every day&nbsp; lightly. Air is an element that defines your health and determines the quality of your life, at the moment and in the future. Little details can make the difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GLOBAL AIR POLLUTION By: Milo Isersky&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you know that humans take 20,000 breaths every day? Well yes, air is very important for us to live, because if we don’t breathe we die. Air is also important for animals and plants, because they also need to breathe air to live, like humans do. But… have you noticed something strange in the air? That is called Air Pollution.

Air pollution is now one of the biggest environmental risks for early death. Health problems related to Air Pollution kill 800 people per hour and more than 6 million people per year. Strokes, diabetes, respiratory diseases, respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer are caused by air pollution. To be in a place with a lot of air pollution such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan or Delhi, the most contaminated places of the world, affects your lungs more than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.&nbsp;Also, some recent studies are showing that air pollution affects mental health by affecting behavior and&nbsp;emotional development.

Introduction: In this magazine you will find problems that we have on this planet, for example pollution, animal treatment and deforestation. All of these problems have a relation with the central idea. If you read this&nbsp;magazine you are going to realize that this planet is in trouble. We ALL need to cooperate because if only one person acts,&nbsp;it will not be enough. CENTRAL IDEA: Global problems require global cooperation so we all have a responsibility to raise awareness and take care of the planet, plants, animals and ourselves.

There are many different types of chemicals and gasses that contribute to air pollution. Black carbon is one of the toxins that contaminates the air the most. Black carbon emissions come mainly from four sources: diesel engines for transport and industries, residential solid fuels such as wood and coal, open forests and savanna burning, natural and initiated by people and industrial processes usually from small boilers. People who are in major contact because of labor situations or because they live in a contaminated area and have higher exposures to black carbon over a long period of time have a higher probability to have heart attacks and strokes. Also hypertension, asthma, pulmonary diseases, bronchitis and a variety of types of cancer, can be produced by black carbon. Black carbon is not the only gas that causes air pollution, though.&nbsp;

    Ozone is a gas that can occur naturally or be caused by human beings, and it is one of the gases that contaminates the air a lot. But it can also be good depending on its location. If it is high up in the atmosphere, it is good and not toxic.

The animals were terrified because they didn't have a home to live in. They were about to die without a home place and without a place to go. A ploughshare tortoise was scared and her friend the bee was sacred too because they were left without a home. In the Guarani community, near Carlos's&nbsp;site, homes were flooded because there were no more&nbsp;roots to absorb the rain. It happened because when trees were cut down, the soil lost its fertility over time and also water holding capacity of the soil got reduced.

There was no hope until a man named Juan came to the rainforest. This man came from Europe too, but he had studied about deforestation and told the loggers to stop.&nbsp;At first, no one listened. Floods were everywhere and the jaguars like Mike were very aggressive because they&nbsp;didn’t understand what was happening. The Guaraníes adopted Mike. Guaraníes started to be afraid because there were very many fires and flooding&nbsp;so they left the rainforest. Mike was alone. Some people&nbsp;stayed and decided to listen to Juan who wanted to protect the rainforest. One day Juan saw Mike across the river. He wanted to help Mike but as the Paraná River was so high he couldn’t cross it. Only the jaguars could cross that river; for for a human, it was impossible to cross. Nevertheless, the jaguar could swim and cross it. Juan felt relieved when Mike crossed the river safely. He also saw a turtle, a bee, and many birds leaving the place in search of a new home.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I am going to tell a story about my best friend. I was living with a lot of animals. We were living in a laboratory, and we were injured because we were used for testing in experiments. Each one of us lived in a separate cage. We all had the same purpose - to be tested - but we wanted to escape. We needed to be free. The scientists who worked there were very mean to us. They treated us cruelly&nbsp;and even killed some of our friends by using new products on our bodies to investigate their reactions. One&nbsp;night me and the other animals worked out a plan to recover our freedom.&nbsp;

The plan was the following. The little rats were in charge of spying on the guard. They usually came to check the animals and to close the window at night. The escape would take place before that. The rabbits were in charge to observe if&nbsp;the rats made a signal to communicate that the zone was free for us to pass through the window.&nbsp;

Silently we started our mission, but at that moment the first guard appeared so we had to go back to our cages. All the animals began to run back to the lab. Unfortunately some of them had a lot of difficulties in doing it quickly because they suffered pain all over their bodies and needed to stop and rest, because it was really difficult to go there because of the injuries. For example, a rabbit stopped to scrape his hair, and a monkey stopped because his leg hurt a lot. Fortunately we all got to the laboratory and the guards didn't see anything strange.&nbsp;We were all very afraid,&nbsp;but we decided to&nbsp;go to sleep. The next morning, scientists came again to do their experiments, trying&nbsp;more products on us, new ones. A bird became deaf in his left ear. Luckily, me and the other animals survived. That night all of us felt very tired and had no strength to escape again.

Do you know that we can make houses to help those who don't have one, using trash that contaminates and kills animals? Yes, we can make&nbsp;houses that are resistant with trash that contaminated, but instead of making&nbsp;houses with trash we throw it to the ocean and kill animals. We all know that the contamination is very difficult to resolve but instead of throwing the trash at the sea we can do it. So my idea is that for one time we can use a thing that contaminated a lot to do something good. We can build houses for people that don't have them. You have to put the trash you collect in a bottle and they use the bottle filled with trash like bricks. So if you eat cookies and you have the wrapper put it on a plastic bottle and then donate the bottle full of trash. Besides, it is not noticeable that the house is made of bottles if you paint them and they are resistant. Most of the time poor people live in houses made of plastic bottles because they are not expensive to make. In Africa they have a very big house that is made with bottles and is very colorful because they don’t paint it.

It is very important to solve this problem in very little time because if not we will destroy the world. Plastics are very bad for the world because plastic is not degradable so the plastic degrades in 450 years.If we don't help, we are going to be a disaster. We can save the world by doing some solutions like recycling, using public transport, not wasting water, and other simple actions. The contamination is a very serious problem and we have to solve it by working together as a global community.&nbsp;

Do you know what contamination is? Contamination is a very serious problem that killed a lot of animals. One type of contamination is throwing plastics or trash to the ocean or to the street. For example when you throw something to the street you are contaminating it because all arrive to the ocean and kill animals because they get stuck with the trash that is there. It is difficult to solve because so many people&nbsp;contaminate the world but if we do some things together, we can solve it. Some islands made of trash are bigger than countries and is very sad because the animals die because they eat micro pieces of plastic.&nbsp;

Did you know that there’s so much trash in the ocean that it has formed a type of trash island? Well at first I thought that it was a joke or fake news but when I investigated more and more I realized that it was true and I was shocked. It is a very important problem that we need to solve, but do you know how they are formed? Well, they are formed by so much trash that gets stuck with other trash, but&nbsp;if you want to take it out of the ocean, it would fill 100 Boeing 747 planes. If we took all this out, it would still be contaminated because in the ocean there are micro pieces of plastic that animals eat, and we eat the animals.

The animals are forced to make certain&nbsp;movements such as dancing&nbsp;and jumping&nbsp;that are presented as artistic&nbsp;performances but actually hurt them.&nbsp;“They are often physically uncomfortable and psychologically distressed, as well as dangerous. Over time the animals can damage their muscles, joints, or bones.”&nbsp;For example they force elephants to stand on one leg or just stand on their hind legs causing hernias.&nbsp; Also another type of dance is moving their heads, which can cause muscle pain, which may become chronic. There are animals, for example lions and tigers, which are forced to jump into burning rings, which they are actually scared of. Apes are forced to ride on motorcycles and some big cats are forced to stand on top of horses which is terrifying for both.They burn the&nbsp;front paws of the&nbsp;bears so they walk on two legs. “The “trainers” frequently use chains, whips, muzzles, metal hooks, and electric prods to force animals to behave in a certain manner. Other methods include chaining animals and depriving them of food and water.” They punish the animals when they are young&nbsp;so they respond and are scared of their trainers. &nbsp;“This punishment is constant and very harsh, since otherwise it might fail to condition the animals to act in ways that are uncomfortable and unnatural to them.”&nbsp;

Zoos Another place where animals are suffering is in zoos. Animals are suffering because they are in small places in the zoo. They are taken away from their parents and their&nbsp;natural hábitat, where they have their natural food and more space. They lose their abilities to catch their food so if they are ever released from the zoos, they will need to be in a sanctuary for a long time, because that means that they can’t survive in the wild.

All of the animals were relieved to escape, but life was different now because of the injuries and pain they had gained while they lived in the lab. They had lost their hair, others were blind and they felt no strength on their legs. It would be difficult to survive in the wild again, or to live a normal, healthy life. Fortunately as we were walking down the street a kid who was coming back from school saw us and decided to help our group of animals. His name was Mike. He immediately called&nbsp;his uncle who was a vet and he came quickly to rescue us.

Now me and my friends are at the vet and the people here are taking good care of us. They are respectful and they give us a lot of love. For sure&nbsp;in a few days we will be free again and maybe returned to our habitats. It is important to understand that animals suffer as people suffer. Stop testing in animals. Humans have a responsibility to protect all creatures and to resolve this by using products, such as of beauty, shampoo, and sunscreen, that have this label in the package to avoid animal testing. Animal Abuse in Circuses, Aquariums and Zoos

&nbsp;Many families go to circuses, aquariums and zoos for enjoyment. They buy tickets to see animals that are attractive, animals that they don’t see everyday, wild animals, etc. But, most people don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes.&nbsp;In circuses, aquariums and zoos animals are abused both physically and psychologically. To begin with, they are held captive in bad conditions&nbsp;instead of living in their natural habitats with their own species. Elephants, monkeys, bears, tigers, whales&nbsp;and many others are forced to do tricks to entertain the public. To be able to do this, they are punished constantly, and they finally act out of fear. Also,&nbsp;having non-domestic animals as pets is a form of abuse.&nbsp;

Global warming:&nbsp; In addition to its effect on health, air pollution is also one of the causes of global warming and these are some of the worldwide concerns. Trying to find ways to limit the greenhouse gases will put air, the climate, and the world into a safer place.&nbsp;

The changes that have happened since the Industrial Revolution are the main cause of global warming because they have increased the amount of harmful emissions. An enormous amount of greenhouse gases, once in the atmosphere, expose the Earth directly to the sun's rays, like ultraviolet radiation. Part of greenhouse gases are generated after the burning of fossil fuels. We observe this, for example, in large urban centers with the massive burning of fuel by cars and other heavy means of transport.&nbsp;The gas pollutants, including black carbon, ozone gas and sulfur dioxide, get trapped in the atmosphere. They act like a blanket, holding heat close to the Earth. This causes global warming.

Deforestation of jungles and forests &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;One way we can reduce air pollution is by reducing deforestation. Trees have the capacity to convert CO2 into oxygen. CO2 is a gas that contaminates a lot of the air and is very bad for the world.

You know who is the country that is more contaminated? There are so many countries that are contaminated. the top 7 of countries that are more contaminated are shown in the chart above. China is a country that is very contaminated because it is very big and has so many people in a city. Some people doesn’t want to contaminate but we have to solve it all, is a global problem that all need to cooperate to solve it.

How we can solve this problem? Well there are some solutions but they are complicated because some people don’t care about the world and about their lives one solution is to start making houses that are made of trash because that doesn't contaminate the ocean. That is one solution but there are more solutions like,using public transport because if we do that we don’t use so much cars and cars are contaminated a lot, buy local products because that reduces the air transportation that is contaminated and reduce the use of plastic because that is contaminated a lot,pick up plastic bottles that are in the street,and more.

The most old and&nbsp;weak animals have even given up the idea of being free again. Suddenly a soft voice said: ¨I want to survive, I don't want&nbsp;to die in this ugly laboratory, I need to be free!¨ It was a little dog, almost crying. And all the other animals in a chorus replied: “Me too!!!!”&nbsp; “Well, well, I am going to design another plan, I have been thinking of this for a long time,” Stanley, the smart and blind monkey, said. He had become blind last month because of the testing of a toxic drug on his eyes. The plan he invented was to attack the guard and then attack the scientists early in the morning, to make them feel the same the animals feel every time they test a new product on them. First of all, they had to distract the guard, and&nbsp;then get the&nbsp;drops which were in the left drawer, the ones which made Stanley blind. They would put&nbsp;them in the scientists' eyes.&nbsp;The animals with most experience in jumping were the rabbits, so they were in charge of this.&nbsp;The next morning, as soon as the scientists came, Rex the dog began to play and ask for attention. Rex wanted to distract them so the rabbits could search for the drops. That was very easy. Step one was done.

The following thing was to pour the drops in the scientists' eyes. Cakatoa, a bird, got the drops with her beak and flew near the faces of the scientists. When she was near enough she pressed the beak and the drops fell into their eyes. Immediately they began to shout and cry, saying they could see anything.&nbsp;The plan was perfect. They were suffering. For sure they felt the same as we did the days before.&nbsp;The scientists fell to the floor. They could not understand what was going on until&nbsp;a rabbit spoke and told them that this was a lesson. We were trying to show and teach them how we felt every time we were used for testing.
