The USA in 1776 wasn’t as big as today. Only 13 colonies under British rule on the east coast formed the USA.

They wore Mowhawk Indian costumes and threw tea from a ship into the water, while hundreds of people were watching and cheering .

The British closed the port of Boston and ended self-goverment in the colony

In 1789 George Washington, the leader of the patriots' army became the first president of the USA. The first capital is New York.

Thomas Jefferson (in the middle) was one of the people who wrote the Declaration of Independence

On the fourth of July 1776, Congress decided to leave the British Empire and approved the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration declares the basic rights and values of US citizens. According to the Declaration everyone has the right to live in freedom and find happiness.

Still today Washington is a famous person. The capital Washington D. C. is named by him and his face is also in Mount Rushmore.

After the Tea Act of 1767 many people were angry about the British government and the high taxes. Because of that the Sons of Liberty (a patriotic group , that prefers to be independent) organized a protest in the Boston harbour.
