How Japan has changed over time.
An example of how Japan has changed over time is their fashion/what people wear in Japan.
During the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan, kimonos were worn as a way to show one's power and status. Kimonos were like an art form with elaborate patterns. With these kimonos, women wore a red lip and white face paint. Their hair was worn in buns, and they usually had a hair clip to accessorize. Around the 1910s and 1950s, the way kimonos were made were improved, allowing them to have multiple colors and asymmetrical designs. Many took inspiration from art deco, making them colorful and adding large motifs.

Jumping ahead to the Heisei Period (1989-Currently), some people in Japan wear Japanese Street fashion. It is a style, with many subcultures including but not limited to, fairy kei, gothic and normal lolita, gyaru, decora, and cosplay.
Lolita (not to be confused with the novel of the same name.) is a street fashion subculture originating from Japan and often associated with the city of Harajuku. It’s based on 18th century Rococo fashion and femininity, with voluminous petticoats and copious amounts of lace. The basics in a lolita coord are a blouse, a skirt or jumper skirt, a petticoat, bloomers, cute socks and shoes, and many accessories. Makeup for a lolita coord has cute aspects. They might even wear colored contacts or a wig. Lolita has many subcultures in itself like gothic lolita, classic, or sweet.

an example of nigiri : )
The element of shallow culture that this will be concentrating on is food.
Sushi is a widely known food from Japan! Sushi has 5 major styles, maki, which is filling and rice wrapped in dried seaweed, uramaki, filling and seaweed with rice around it, sashimi which is just fish/shellfish served alone, nigiri is fish served on sushi rice, and finally temaki, sushi rolled in a cone shape.
Sushi rice consists of cooked rice and a combination of rice vinegar and sugar to make the rice hold its shape. The fish used on sushi is typically raw, and you can buy sushi-grade fish (fish that are safe to eat raw) at markets.
