The wright brothers, Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright, designed, built, and flew the first controlled ever aeroplane on December 17 1903.
They experimented with other machines used to fly such as Hang Glider's, before they built the first plane. The Wrights grew up in Dayton, Ohio and owned a bike shop, but were mainly interested in flight

The Wright Flyer

In 1903, they built a powered aeroplane that had propellers and a small engine. The Wright Flyer airplane first flew successfully on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This was the first time people ever flew a powered airplane they could control. Before that, people flew in balloons or gliders, or for a very short time in planes they could not control. The two brothers continued to make changes to their design and had a very good plane by 1905.

Hot Air Balloons

The hot air balloon is the oldest form of flying technology that can successfully carry people. The earliest use of hot air to make objects fly was made in china. Paper lanterns were sent into the air for signalling.

Joseph Michel Montgolfier and Étienne Montgolfier
Joseph was born in 1740, 26th August and died in 1810 26th June,
Étienne was born in 1745, 6th of January and died in 2nd of August 1799

How It works

The air in the hot air balloon is made of molecules.
When it's cold the molecules get closer together,
when it is hot they move away from the other molecules
So, in the same space, there are fewer molecules in hot air and then hot air is lighter than cold air. This makes it rise and carry up the balloon when the air inside it is heated. The air is heated in the balloon with a burner, which uses bursts of fire to keep the air hot. The fire is fuelled by propane. The heated air is kept inside the balloon by its fabric.

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart (born July 24, 1897, disappeared July 2, 1937) was an American aviation pioneer and author.

Amelia Earhart was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

Facts about Amelia Earhart

#1 Amelia dropped out of school to volunteer as a nurse for world war I soldiers.

#2 After Amelia disappeared, America spent $4 million looking for her.

#3 When Amelia went missing she crashed somewhere near the pacific ocean
