Mother Mouse was shocked and she turned their car around.&nbsp; “Well, LuLu, we must teach these kids a lesson- but we must also be kind!” So Mother Mouse and LuLu went back to the classroom.&nbsp;“Mr. Hooble, can I say a few things?” Asked Mother Mouse with ease.&nbsp; “Why yes, of course, go right ahead!” Said the teacher. “Please talk in my stead!” So Mother Mouse called all the children around.&nbsp; “Listen here, children, I have a lesson to teach, and some very important things to preach!” So Mother Mouse talked, while LuLu nodded along. “We are all equal, no matter what you think! We all walk and talk and sometimes need a drink! We laugh and we play, but let’s do it together! LuLu here is just as much of an animal as you are- she’s sweet and she’s brave and you should be kind to her, no matter what you’ve already said, you too can be nice- we’re animals! Now be kind in my stead!” And after all that talk, when Mother Mouse was done, LuLu put in a word, and exclaimed, just for fun!

Opening her eyes with a flash, LuLu remembered today was the day! She could hardly belive she was going to be a student, for it was her first day of school! She wolfed down her breakfast and ran down the stairs- she had to pack her bag, because Mother Mouse said to always be prepared!

&nbsp;“Gross, gross, gross! It’s so gross- the most gross thing I’ve ever seen- and I’ve seen a whole lot of gross things! Humans are weird, you must know! And you live on 1234 MiceMouse Lane? Gross! That’s where my mama told me NEVER to go! And you know what she said? She said humans are gross!” LuLu’s eyes began to water, and her lip began to tremble. Oh, no! She thought. I was so excited for school, but now I just want to go HOME!

Finally, the bus stopped and a very nervous LuLu gingerly walked into her classroom. The teacher smiled his wide smile and laughed his big belly-shaking laugh. “Hello, LuLu! I’m Mr. Hooble, and I’ll be your teacher this year! I’m so glad you’ve come at last!” LuLu managed a small smile.&nbsp; “Hi, Mr. Hooble,” She said, her bad mood already evaporating. Today wasn’t going to be exasperating!

The feeling of happiness Mr. Hooble had given LuLu quickly vanished without a trace as a large tiger boy came up to her. “Hey, weirdo human! You only have hair on your head and you don’t even have a mom that is related to you! EW!” LuLu sniffled, walking away in a rush. She ran smack dab into a bird girl.&nbsp; “Ew! Go away, you silly, smelly, and scandalous human!” This made LuLu so upset that she wanted to cry! But she couldn’t- you know why? She wanted to stay at school and be cool!

She ran away from the bird girl and sat down on the rug. A little mouse girl walked up to her. She was wearing a pretty pink dress. Just as LuLu was about to compliment it, the mouse wrinkled her nose and closed her eyes, waving her hand in front of her snout!

Why are they so mean? I'm just like them, but this horrible day was completly unseen!

Excited, she ran out of the door when the bus pulled up- but not before giving Mother mouse a big ole' hug! But as she got on the bus, everyone stared. Whispered gossip passed around, and LuLu was scared! LuLu quickly sat down, her face burning with shame. Why had she thought she could be the same as the animals on MiceMouse and Animal Lane?

Dear reader, LuLu's First Day is a mismash of a hundred different books with a little bit of imagination sprinkled on top. I took the idea of a town made of animals from Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. I took the idea of a modernized animal world with a school and cars from books like Penny and her Marble and Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, but the idea of the only human in an animal world was origanally mine. For the message of the book, I wanted to get across that you should always accept people no matter what they look like, where they live, or who they love. From, Audrey

Sadly, LuLu trudged up to the teacher.&nbsp; “My throat is sore and I want to go home! Can you please call Mother Mouse over the phone?”&nbsp; The teacher bent down.&nbsp; “Yes, of course! Just go right home and rest well, I dearly hope your throat will feel swell!” So Mother Mouse came, and in their car, LuLu told Mother Mouse about how mean the kids at school were!

“I think we should all go and play.. All the tigers, birds, mice, cats, dogs,- all of us, we’re practically family! So let’s go to recess, and play a game! Because today is the day I finally came!” And when the day was done, and LuLu had all that fun, it was finally time to go home. The little mouse with the pretty pink dress had a dad and a mom that were smiling without rest. The big angry tiger who was really&nbsp; quite nice had two moms and they both smelled like amazing cinnamon spice. And the other bird girl, with a big smiling face, went home to her grandfathers, but not before she challenged LuLu to a race! So they all had fun, and LuLu made friends, and when she went home, she couldn’t WAIT to do it again!

A half hour later, LuLu got dressed in her new outfit- A bright, blue, bouncy, and beutiful shirt, a perfect purple skirt, and a little lemon-colored hair bow! She ran back down the stairs and fidgeted with her hair. Mother mouse came and handed her a beutiful backpack.

Audrey is in 6th grade and goes to Harpeth Hall Middle School. She was inspired by the book Slyvester and the Magic Pebble, one of her many favorites. Audrey loves cats, birds, mice, and all the other animals that aren't in the story. She loves cats so much that she even named the main charecter after her cat! Audrey likes shopping at thrift stores, watching TV, and annoying her sister by playing with said cat.
