The Attempt to Escape (Excerpt 4)

Mr. Thomas was sending me to another plantation. It wasn't too far away. When I arrived I met the master of the farm. His name was Mr. Covey. I became a field hand for him. I was happier here. He wouldn't treat us as bad as some of my other masters did.

We worked all day everyday. No matter the weather or time. When we ate Mr. Covey would tell us to go back to work even if we didn't finish our food. Mr. Covey was the smartest animal in the jungle. He didn't hurt us slaves because he wanted us to work. He thought if we were disrespected while working we wouldn't run away or start a fight.

I had started to snap. I realized Covey was working us too much. I was trapped in an endless cycle of working that I had to get out of. I felt trapped in a bubble of a world. No matter how hard I tried I always felt like I was going to be a slave. But that's just what I thought.

I was angry. I had to do something about it. I decided to escape. The wind became too fierce and the days became repulsive. The night had turned its lights of. I was cold, scared, hungry, and miserable. As I put my arms in my shirt a ran through the brown cold, wet leaves bare foot.

I was just about to make it out but someone told Mr. Covey where I was. Once he found me he started to hurt me. He came at me with his cowskin. He started kicking me until he made me fall to the floor. I wanted to fight back but was to weak.

Once I grew better I tried escaping again. I successfully escaped and ended up going to Mr. Aulds house. He wasn't as accepting as I thought he was because he sent be back right away. Little did he know I ended up going to an acquaintances house. I met Sandy Jenkins. We had a long talk and I ended up staying there for a little but they told me to go back to the farm and confront Mr covey. Sandy had a nice house. He lived with his wife in the forest. I was finally on my way back to the farm.

When I arrived back Covey was ready for me. He was waiting there. This time I was prepared for a fight. When he whipped me I got up and fought back. I thought I knew what was gonna happen. I would lose and he would keep hurting me till I couperated. I was scared but still fought. I continued until I had won. After that he didn't hurt me again. He wouldn't hurt me. Even though we fought he never hurt me.
