The suffragettes were in full swing before the war, they were protesting and news about them was spreading; however, when the war came, men were rushed out to the battlefield. The suffragettes had the idea of assisting the war so that they would gain independence, even if it was for a short amount of time. This strategy worked and allowed women to have more independence for the duration of the war. They worked difficult roles and made ammunition for the soldiers. This would cause their skin to go yellow and their hair to fall off. They were called 'canaries'. Women also worked back at home, in groups like the land army and VAD.
