All About Clara Barton
Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day in 1821 in North Oxford, Massachusetts.  She was the founder of the American Red Cross.  The American Red Cross is set up for people who need help when they can’t get to the hospital, usually during times of disaster.  Clara’s mother believed in equal rights for women and all people. Her father owned a farm.  Clara’s brothers and sisters taught her how to read and write when she was very young so she did well in school.  She was the youngest of five children. She took care of sick animals on her dad’s farm. When her brother David fell off a roof Clara spent two years caring for him and eventually he got better thanks to her! This is when she started to want to work to help others.  She became a teacher and fought for equal pay.  She wanted to earn the same wage as men.  She, like her mother, fought for women’s rights.  She been moved to Washington, D.C. and got Abraham Lincoln on her side! She went overseas and worked for the International Red Cross in France.  Then she came back and started the American Red Cross and the organization still helps people and collects blood for hospitals today.
