The Battle of Iwo Jima was&nbsp;an epic military campaign between U.S Marines and the imperial Army of japan in early 1945. Located 750 miles off the coast of Japan, the island of Iwo Jima had three airfields that could serve as a staging facility for a potential invasion of mainland Japan.

In&nbsp;Thirty-six days&nbsp;of fighting on the island, nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20,000 were wounded. Marines captured 216 Japanese soldiers; the rest were killed in action. The island was finally declared secured on March 26, 1945.

Iwo Jima today is home to thousands of brave U.S military members. who  are bared under the soil of Iwo Jima.

Iwo Jima is near japan. Iwo Jima was a small island that war took place. Iwo Jima was famous for the battle of Iwo Jima. Starting on June 15 1944, The U.S navy and the U.S Army Air Forces began naval bombardments and air raids against Iwo Jima. 

The Japanese defense was to build tunnels to move around where war took place.

Taking the island meant more than a symbolic capture of the Japanese homeland. It meant the U.S could launch bombing runs from Iwo Jima's strategic airfields, as the tiny island was directly under the flight path of B-29 Super fortresses from Guam, Saipan and the Mariana Islands.

Smith, USMC,&nbsp;landed on Iow Jima&nbsp;on February 19. Despite the 14,000 tons of shells fired on it by the U.S. Navy, the island was won by the blood of the thousands.<br/>

<strong> T</strong>he Americans secured victory on Iwo Jima on march 26, 1945, after both sides had paid a devastating toll in lives. Out of an estimated 20,000 Japanese troops on the island, only slightly over 200 survived the battle.
