The Journey Begins

We should go way back to September 13, 1857 when Milton was born. He had a father named Henry and a mother named Fanny. Henry was a dreamer. He loved reading and trying new things. By the year 1860, Henry's farm failed. Henry moved his family to Tiusville, Pa.

Oil was then discovered there and Henry wanted to make his fortune by pumping oil. Henry also tried selling supplies to the prospectors pouring into the area. None of them worked. Within a year and a half, Fanny's family had to pay to bring them back to Hockersville.

Life on the farm was finished. In 1871, Milton had left school and was apprenticed by a local printer, Sam Ernst, who published a German-English newspaper. He had that until his hat got caught in one of the machines. He was fired shortly after. After that, he decided to learn the trade of candy making instead. So thanks to Joseph Royer in Lancaster, he had created his first candy business.

After that, he started the Lancaster Caramel Company.

Chapter 2

Life in the Candy Making Days

He borrowed money to start the Lancaster Caramel Company. He was successful. He made a lot of money so he could make the town of Hershey, PA.

We will get to that in chapter 5, so let's learn about his candy making life.

Milton loved candy making from the beginning. Customers liked his caramels and peppermint and...... fudge.

For new customers, Milton printed fancy business cards to help advertise his candies.

After some time, Milton moved back to Pennsylvania in 1886. He was 29 years old. He felt as if he would never have a chance to use his business cards.

Chapter Three

The Second Company

Milton did not get a good welcome back in Lancaster.

After some time, Milton decided to make a second company.

Business was........... great. Everyone seemed to be eating the caramels Milton was making. There were many choices to eat. Soon Milton had to expand. In 1893, Milton had an idea that would make Hershey an around the world name.
