She was born in London, England on April 3, 1934.

She studied at Darwin College, University of Cambridge.  In 1965, she earned a Ph.D. in ethology, or the study of animal behavior.

She has a son.  His name is Hugo Eric Louis van Lawick.

Jane loves animals. Her favorite is the chimpanzee. She observes them.
