INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY NEWSLETTER

December 2021Newton County Schools has made a commitment to become one of the leaders in educational technology in Georgia, both nationally and globally. This commitment has included pioneering technology to prepare our students not only to compete in the real world but to excel on a global stage.
This year, the Instructional Technology team lead efforts to expose girls across the district to various opportunities in the Computer Science field through our 5th annual InspirHER: Code Like a Girl Conference! This year we increased our reach and invited 460 students to participate. In an effort to continue this momentum of expansion, we held 23 satellite conferences at each individual school!
At Code Like a Girl, we welcomed leaders from the field of STEM and computer science as they present innovative computer science lessons to our girls. The girls had the opportunity to network with their peers and discuss relevant topics to form a sisterhood. This year our theme was InspiHER Creativity! Our goal was to inspire our girls to create, collaborate, and communicate with technology as they navigate the new decade. As we helped them deepen their computer science skills, we also boosted their confidence. More than that, we empowered our girls to push the boundaries of technology and use it to change the world. We want to continue to build a sisterhood of peers and role models who will help our students persist and succeed within the community.
InspiHER 2021 would not have been possible without the support of our amazing sponsors: Classlink, Book Creator, Nearpod, and Brainpop!

ExposHER to the POSSIBILITES
First time coding NCCA students, using Wonder Workshops, Dash robot to code a series of challenges!
Research shows that only 24% of computer scientists are women. Research further indicates that overall interest in computer science-related fields drastically drops after fourth grade and the older students get, especially among the female student body, the less interest there is in programming and computer science overall. Our objective during this conference is to help close the gender gap in technology by exposing females to the possibilities awaiting them in the field and to change the image of what a computer programmer looks like

These middle school InspiHER participants are using what they learned during their Microsoft coding station to code these Sphero robots through this maze! Our girls worked hard to get the job done!
