Montag's class
It was a warm spring day in Kaperville. Birds were
singing, people were walking, and bikers flew down
the busy streets. The trees waved to the people nearby.
Kaperville was a very happy place to live in- for everyone
except Lila Jones. She felt like she didn’t fit in. All the people
living in Kaperville were so talented and gifted. LIla thought
that she wasn’t as worthy as them because she wasn’t good
at anything, while they were. She stuck out like a sore thumb.
Lila wanted to live in the Big Apple with Rose, her best friend,
Rose had been her neighbor and close friend. She was the
only person that understood Lila and accepted her despite
her insecurities. Rose gave Lila lots of advice and helped her
through tough times. She was like a mom to her.

Rose had been her neighbor and close friend. She was the

her insecurities. Rose gave Lila lots of advice and helped her
through tough times. She was like a mom to her.
One day, Rose decided to travel to Kaperville
for Lila’s 15th birthday. She had noticed that
Lila had been acting sad. On the phone, Lila
had been very depressed.
“Why do you sound so sad?” Rose had asked Lila.
“I feel like I’m not good enough,” LIla had cried.
“Everyone at school is really good at something.
They have talents, but I’m not sure I do.”
This conversation motivated Rose to surprise LIla.
A few weeks later, Rose’s plane landed in Kaperville.
She ran to Lila’s house.
“Open your door!” Rose shouted from outside.
LIla didn’t understand. She was still half asleep.
What’s happening? She wondered. Lila opened her
door and stared. Her jaw dropped! Rose ran in and
hugged Lila.

“Happy birthday!” Rose shouted. “I wanted
to surprise you! Look, I got you a present.” The
present turned out to be a sketchbook and pencils.
The sketchbook was as colorful as a rainbow. Lila
thought it was pretty, so she looked up realistic drawings
for beginners. LIla began drawing. At first, it was fun, but
she later began worrying that her drawings weren’t
good enough.
“I want to give up, Rose!” LIla cried.
“No, you should keep going!” Rose encouraged.
“Your drawings are so good. People will love it!”
Lila took Rose’s advice.

Lila took Rose’s advice.
“OK,” she agreed. “I’ll keep on making art
forever.” Lila finished her sketch. After that, she
moved on to painting. Lila loved making art and
practiced it for hours. When Rose left to go back
to the Big Apple, Lila was still creating.

A couple of months later, one of LIla’s other
friends came over and saw her paintings.
“These are so, so good!” she said. “You
should try selling them!” The praise gave Lila
encouragement and confidence. She put her
paintings up for sale, and soon enough, people
began buying them. Lila called Rose.
“People are loving my paintings, Rose!” she said.
“I feel like I finally am really good at something. I have
talent! I am good enough, and just as worthy as everyone
else in Kaperville. I just didn’t know it before because
I had never taken a chance and worked really
hard on something!”
“That’s amazing, Lila!” Rose said.
“I’m so happy for you. In fact,
I’m going to visit you
right now to celebrate!”
Rose came over and visited Lila,
and the two of them sat together drawing.
It was one year later, and nothing
had changed- except now Lila had
confidence, happiness, and a skill.
She was an amazing artist.
