For this Freestyle assignment, I decided to watch a movie about The Swimmers, and I really enjoyed it.
The first part of the film was about the sister’s life in Syria. The normal teenage parts of their lives for example going to swimming classes when their dad used to teach them, playing at the pool, having birthday parties and partying with friends. But all these normal things they used to do were affected by the violence in Syria, as they experienced the loss of their friends and family from bombings.
How they traveled between Syria and Germany. They made a big decision by fleeing without their family and I can’t imagine how hard that would be for The Mardini sisters. Yusra and Sara and their cousin Nizar first travel to Turkey, where they cross the Aegean Sea in a dangerously small boat with other refugees where the Mardini sisters swam for many hours so that the boat wouldn’t sink. They traveled from Serbia to Hungary where Yusra gets raped by Hungaranian man where her sister Yusra comes to rescue by pushing the man of her sister and he punches her and that where his boss caught him. They were supposed to get on some truck that goes to Germany, Yusra refused to get on the truck because she was afraid that something bad happens to her and her sister, and obviously they didn’t get on the truck because Yusra couldn’t, so they walk to some hotel and slept their at one night, the morning after they get a pretty good news that there was a bus that goes to Berlin in a safely way, it was one of their happiest moments ever. Where they find temporary housing at local refugee camp. Were they looking for a swimming club somewhere nearby? Yusra convinces a local swim coach, Sven, to train her and Sara. Yusra and Sara are informed that they will not be able to apply for asylum for the rest of their family. Yusra her keeps focus on her training, while Sara becomes more interested in her new social life. Sven told Yusra with an opportunity to join an Olympic team for refugees, Yusra was hoping to Compete for Syria, she refuses at first but eventually agrees with encouragement from Sara. Yusra qualifies for the team and makes it to the 2016 Olympics RIO de Janeiro. While she faces stigma for being refugee. She ultimately proves merit as an athlete.
