Heer and Ranjha is part of the novel of tragic love story of Punjab. There are several poetic narrations of the story, the most famous being Heer by Waris Shah written in 1766. It tells the story of the love between Heer Sial and Dheedo Ranjha. The story is often compared to the Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet".

Heer was an extremely beautiful woman, born into a wealthy Muslim family of Sial Jatts and Dheedo Ranjha is the youngest of four brothers and lives in the village of Takht Hazara by the river Chenab in Punjab, Pakistan.
Ranjha a handsome, young man is the local Romeo of the village of Takht Hazara. He lives with his seven older brothers and their families in a large house. He plans to travel to the village of Jhang where is close friend is getting married. His family stops him as the people of Takht Hazara and Jhang have been enemies for ages. He ignores their warning and leaves for wedding.

During the wedding dance, he meets with a young girl, Heer, the daughter of a landlord from Jhang. He falls for her beauty and grace. Later, when playing hide and seek with her friends, Heer accidentally catches Hold of Ranjha. He said “I want to know you”. When she hears that he is from the enemy village, she fears for his life and she said “you have to leave” and Ranjha said “no, I’m not leaving!”. He promises to stay for as long as the river Chenab flows. Heer is elated and persuaders her parents to employ him as their cowherd. They agree without knowing her feelings for him. She regularly brings food for Ranjha and they develop a warm friendship. He confesses his love and ask if she feels the same. She was too shocked to reply and runs away to her home.
