All the Light We Cannot See
Synopsis and Recommendation
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a novel in dual perspective, set during WWII, that follows the storylines of Werner Pfennig and Marie-Laure LeBlanc. Werner is a German orphan turned Nazi soldier fascinated by learning. He begins his life in a bleak coal-mining town and is recruited into a Hitler Youth school in Schulpforta. While there, he helps the German army build a device to find illegal radio transmissions, and eventually hunts down “the rebellion” himself. The other main character, Marie-Laure, is a blind Parisian girl displaced by the war. She escapes with her father to her Uncle’s house in Saint-Malo, France. The attic contains an old radio transmitter that Werner eventually finds using his receiver. The novel follows their slow convergence across war-torn Europe and the budding suspense of an added cursed diamond. It shows intense themes of humanity’s greed, childhood innocence, and the effects of conflict on the mind and body. Additionally, Werner and Marie-Laure both undergo rapid development as the war around them drastically alters their lives.

We recommend All the Light We Cannot See for more advanced readers who enjoy detailed historical fiction with a complex plot that features obscure themes. This book is historical fiction set during WWII with alternating stories in France and Germany, so the reader should like multiple points of view and connecting stories.
