Synopsis
Educated is a memoir following Tara growing up in rural "off the grid" Idaho with a survivalist family of Mormons. She was raised in a household that valued work and their radical beliefs that did not align with the "corrupt" school system and the government. As a child it was easier to persuade her with these beliefs, as this was all she knew. However as she began to get older her interest to learn began to grow. She began to study on her own even though her parents disapproved. A door opened up for freedom disguised as her talent for singing in both church and a local theater.
The studying paid off, earning her a spot at a local college. However instead of being met with pride from her family she was instead faced with their disapproval. Tara reached Harvard and Cambridge due to her major success, but during this journey she had to grapple with an inner conflict of choosing family or an education.
Recommendation
We would recommend the book Educated to people who want to follow the life of someone with a very different living situation. Additionally if you are questioning the power of an education, and the effects not having one would have on your life.
