We Were Liars
By: e. Lockhart
Within this thought to be "perfect" family, questions, greed, and secrets all emerge stemming from "summer 15". On a private island off the coast of MA, the Sinclair family lives their lavish lifestyle away from the public eye. At the head of this family, there is the manipulative, judgey, and quick to assume grandfather named Harris Sinclair. From him and his wife who just recently died, there stems 3 daughters and many grandchildren. The main protagonist, Cadence Sinclair, is the eldest grandchild, one of many who spend their summers vacationing on this private island, enjoying the amenities, and spending time with each other. However, when one summer changes everything for Cadence, secrets emerge from absence and this "perfect" family begins to fall apart at the seams.
Also, this story touches on Cadence's constant battle with amnesia, and returning to the island, now having to cope with the gradual distance coming between her and her friends.
Our group really liked reading this book, however we were both sort of confused by the ending and felt like there were some unanswered questions remaining at the end. Overall, we would recommend reading this book as there were many hidden meanings and significances to sections throughout, which were very interesting to de-code and figure out how they related to the story. Although short in length, this book was very dense with meaning and in-depth significance.
