By David Benioff
Historical Fiction
Survival and hope amidst Hitler's invasion
In the City of Thieves by David Benioff, we follow the story of Lev, a Russian teenager who finds himself in a dangerous situation after he and his fellow firefighters discover a dead German pilot in the streets of St. Petersburg. After getting caught looting the soldier, Lev is taken to a Russian prison, left behind by all of what he thought were his friends. This is when he and another prisoner, Koyla, are given a strange task, leading to all sorts of uncanny, not to mention dangerous, interactions and events throughout a desolate Russia during Hitler's invasion of the country.

Synopsis

The story of Lev and Koylas' adventure from Saint petersburg to a german concentration camp remains intriguing throughout the whole book .David Benioff's City of Thieves accurately depicts the true conditions of russia during Hitler's invasion, the book is perfect for someone interested in learning more about the true history of World War 2. However the book is not for the faint of heart. The heavy themes and scenes portray the true conditions of what war is really like. Our group understands that these kinds of themes are not for everyone, so it is not fit for all readers. However our group recommends David Benioff's City of Thieves for mature readers who want to read a beautifully written story that also covers the true history and horrors of russia during Germany's invasion.
