In the Time of the Butterflies
Synopsis and Recommendation
Alvarez does a wonderful job of seamlessly rotating between the three sisters in the past and Dede in her present time. An interesting writing style is that each sister's chapters are set up to better capture their personalities. This book brings the reader a range of emotions varying from sadness to hope to laughter to boredom. There are many dark and explicit parts in the story, but it is all part of showing the horrors and hardships the sisters had to fight through. Together, our group rates the book a 3.5 out of 5 because while it is a very captivating story, the author does a poor job of engaging the readers overely depicts interactions.
