Synopsis and Recommendation

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson follows Melinda, a high school freshman, as she navigates mental and social struggles following a sexual assault. Melinda, as a self-described outcast, is isolated from her former friend group after the incident. Without support from friends or family, she struggles both in social situations as well as academically as she withdraws herself from her surroundings, but fortunately finds solace in her art class. Melinda's experiences portray themes related to the effects of trauma on mental health and behavior and the courage it takes to express yourself. The story is narrated quite casually as it is set in a modern, stereotypical American high school.

Our group recommends this book, especially to young adults, because it represents an experience that is generally relatable to adolescents while teaching valuable lessons about listening to victims of sexual assault, being mindful of others' situations, and learning to advocate for yourself.
