Born A Crime
Born a Crime is a memoir written by Trevor Noah about growing up as a mixed-race child in South Africa. Being a mixed child, Noah, along with millions of others, suffered challenges of racism and segregation posed by Apartheid, a racially discriminatory policy practiced in South Africa. Trevor was born to a Black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss father, which was illegal under the laws of apartheid.
In this book, Trevor uses humor and jokes to face the challenges he encountered throughout his life, providing many meaningful life lessons, and emphasizing how shared languages can connect people. He displayed perseverance, determination, resilience, and the ability to adapt to a society that he couldn’t call his own, in which he often faced severe isolation.
Our Recommendation:
We recommend this book to readers looking for a view into a life outside their own. Noah's stories, struggles and perseverance all contribute to a compelling life story that highlights society in some of it's worst times. Upon reading this book, we can become more aware of the various situations that have been present and are present to this day around the world. This is an important read to everyone and the humorous delivery Noah uses to depict his own experiences help enhance his message.
