The statues are put up in honor of an important ancestor of the family or clan. The moai represented the spirit of the ancestor. Standing tall, the ancestor was near his people to guide and protect them with its spiritual powers.

The&nbsp;figures,&nbsp;totaling&nbsp;about&nbsp;900,&nbsp;are&nbsp;called&nbsp;moai.&nbsp;Some&nbsp;rested&nbsp;on&nbsp;almost&nbsp;300&nbsp;platforms&nbsp;called&nbsp;ahu.

Today,&nbsp;about&nbsp;7,000&nbsp;people&nbsp;live&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;island.&nbsp;Most&nbsp;are&nbsp;descendants&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;ancient&nbsp;Rapa&nbsp;Nui.
