The statues are put up in honor of an important ancestor of the family or clan. The moai represented the spirit of the ancestor. Standing tall, the ancestor was near his people to guide and protect them with its spiritual powers.

Rapa Nui covers 63 square miles (163 square kilometers). This is roughly the size of Washington, D.C.

Today, about 7,000 people live on the island. Most are descendants of the ancient Rapa Nui.
