African Diaspora Trail of Bermuda

The tuckers house is located in St. Georges.  The house has a drawing room, dining room, bed chamber, nursery, a library, an entrance hall, a back hall, a kitchen and a basement. All of the rooms are filled with priceless portraits, furniture and artifacts. 

Admission is free and there is a store in the bottom.

The Bermudian Heritage Museum is a place in St. George's that displays the history of blacks in Bermuda. They have priceless traditional objects from early slaves and free blacks. Unfortunately the trail marker has been destroyed.

This place is located on front street in Bermuda.

When a slave ship was sent off course by a storm was on there way to america. When the ship landed in bermuda slavery was abolished in Britain so it was also abolished in Bermuda. After long discussion the government came to a decision. They said that the slaves could come off of the ship and be free in bermuda or go and be slaves. The statue represents the family of 5 kids and one mother decided to stay on the ship to go back to there family.

The African Diaspora Trail is a special group of Unesco World Heritage Sites located in bermuda. All of the sites on the trail have a direct connection to the African American Slave trade. They all have special markers to indicate that they are part of this trail.

Five of the locations are in St. Georges. One location is in dockyard and the final two are located in Hamilton.

Pilot James Darrell was an extraordinary Bermudian and mariner who spent most his life as a slave. At age 47 Pilot Darrell was guaranteed freedom in recognition of his skill navigating the Royal Naval Flagship HMS Resolution through the narrows channel in 1795. Pilot Darrell was one of Bermuda's first kings pilots and the first known black person to own property on the island. This house was passed on to his wife and children, and was restored and still owned by his direct descendants. Here in St. Georges, Pilot darrell belonged to the island's largest free black community and fought for the rights of free blacks and slaves.

This site is located on Front St. in Hamilton, Pembroke. 

Sally Bassett lived from and unknown date to 21 June 1730. She was killed for poisoning three men, and killing livestock. She had many grandchildren and she was owned by a blacksmith. 

Sally went down in Bermudian history after being burned as a punishment for poisoning the three men. She made a bold impact on the Bermudian slave trade.

St. Peter's church was the first Anglican Church in Bermuda, and to get in would cost 2$ for anybody. This historical site was built in 1615 in the center of the town.

The church graves are all hundreds of years old. The slaves and blacks were segregated from the others in a little space. It was the burial ground for hundreds of slaves and free blacks.

The commissioner's house is located on the very tip of the west side of the island. All the commissioners back in the day lived there when dockyard was young. You can walk to it by purchasing a pass in the museum owning it. It also contains the history of culture and tradition with slaves and free blacks of early Bermuda.

The St. George's Historical Society was established in 1920 and is located on Duke of Kent St &amp; Featherbed Alley. You can call them at 297-0423. It is one of the islands oldest and most unique institutions. Inside past the "Welcoming arm" staircase the room holds a collection true to the spirit of the museum's first exhibit. The St. George's Historical Society is also known as Mitchell House. The house has very interesting architecture and there is a very nice garden. Admission is 5$ for adults and 2.50$ for children under 12. Three is a Dining room, a kitchen, a laundry room, a garden, a bedroom, a livingroom and a basement/workshop.
