Hatfield Marine Science Center Estuary Investigation

I think that having citizen scientist like us is very important. It’s always good to have a new point of view in a subject or idea. It’s also good because the citizen scientist can promote the investigation or research that they have experienced to other people. The citizen scientist experience is beneficial to both the researchers and the citizen scientists. That is why I think its important to have citizen scientists.

We cannot take the rocks on the beach home, because they are cobblestone. The lava came down and poured on to the beach, and when it cooled down, it became cobble stone. Yo ucan’t take the cobblestones because they are irreplaceable.

No, because I would not want to risk the possibility of dying in the middle of the journey. The bar was known to be quite dangerous to crosss, and it was up to other people to decide if they wanted to open the bar for you or not. I don’t think that I would want to cross the bar because of how h=many shipwrecks and accidents that have happened there.

The reason why I love this video is because this was at the very beginning of the journey, and it was really fun to see Sunny vibing to the music

Because its a place where people can go to have fun and get together with people. Since people who live in small(er) towns would all know most of the other people living there, so these activities are probably very significant to them. It’s also an attraction for the public that would bring the town more attention.

The Tilamook factory was made when the first settlers came to the tilamook valley. They decided to build the cheese factory when they noticed how the wet cool climate made green grass grow. These settlers decided that the green grass was perfect for raising dairy cows. That was how the cheese factory was founded in 1851.

Hi! My name is Esther, and I am a Grade 8 PLP student. I like food, the color pink, and my favorite subject at school is Math. I really had a good learning experience throughout this journey, and I had a lot of fun as well, hanging out with my friends. I look forward to doing it again next year with a different project and a different location, and I hope that I have just as much fun in the future as I did throughout the last week. Depoe Bay is known as the Oregon navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

I learned that plankton can be found in sunscreen, ice cream, and nori as well as many everyday food.

We used the variable, hypothesis, result, and outcome criteria, and we ended up getting the result of the biggest male being the fastes in the race. Our conclusion was that size and gender did matter in the speed of a crab.

I think that for our quest today, my team did really well in communicating, and we were able to solve our riddles and get the stamp very quickly. Something we could improve on is staying no more than an arms length apart, because we really didn’t to well with that rule.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

For our ROV challenge today, it was very fun and successful for our group. We overcame challenges through communication and trial and error. We managed to pick up 8 metal objects with our robot. Four spoons, one knife, and three metal marbles. It was a challenge to perfect the buoyancy of the robot, because we had to get the exact right amount of pool noodles on to specific parts of our bot. But we managed to get it right in the end. The easiest part of this whole process was probably the design. But the hardest part of the process in my opinion was the balancing of the buoyancy, or the actual building of the bot. We were the group that managed to pick up the most amount of metal objects, so I was very satisfied. Overall, I think that my group did fantastic with this whole process and and had a great time.

The tsunami machine is in the visitor center because they want people to be aware of how the tsunami works. They want us to be aware of the dangers because this university is in a tsunami zone.

The Yaquina head lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon, and the second oldest.

For a long time along the coast of Oregon, the weather was harsh and the sea was dangerous and difficult to navigate. It was nearly impossible to build the lighthouse at the time, because of th storms and high winds. Most of the materials had to be transported by sea because of the rough roads. The light for the lighthouse in yaquina head was custom manufactured in France and cost $11,000. There are 114 steps to the top of the lighthouse, and has 258 pieces of glass frames in the lighthouse. The lighthouse took a total of 2 years to build. The lighthouse had to be kept clean all the time because unexpected inspections were made 4 times a year. The lighthouse keeping family was a big part of the yaquina head’s history but was replaced with the automated light system in 1966.

When the first European colonizers arrived in the lower region of Columbia, the clan that had lived there for thousands of years, the Chinook were probably quite skeptical but still welcoming. The colonizers established a fur trading business, and forced the first peoples to stop practicing their traditions. They also took a lot of the Western red cedar wood that most of the Indigenous’ culture and lifestyles were based around. The religions and traditions that the Chinooks practiced were put into a stop and their worldviews on the colonizers would have most likely changed. The colonizers set up businesses in their land, took their resources, and treated them unfairly, so the Indigenous would have seen them as the bad guys.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is sometimes called the third largest intertidal rock in the world.

The Wolf Sanctuary that we visited today is a very important place that we should have more of. They protect the wolves, and try to save the prairies and forests using eco-friendly methods. They save the prairies using controlled fires that break apart and spread out the plant growths to keep the prairies healthy. They put the animal’s and nature needs before their own. Places like these are the reason why most of the beautiful animals on this planet have not gone extinct yet. In 1930s the wolf population was completely wiped out in America, and it was thanks to sanctuaries like these that the wolves haven’t gone extinct. They continue to work to regrow the wolf population today because they see the positive impacts that their work has on the world. They think that humans don’t have to be bad for the planet, as long as they work together to protect it. That’s why I think that sanctuaries like this one should be supported and given more space to work with.

I learned about the batteries and details about Fort Stevens. I learned that when they say ‘battery’ they don’t mean a place to store things to recharge later, but means it’s a place for battering. I also learned about what military life was like for the Americans, British, and Canadians living in Fort Stevens. I got to talk to the re-enactors which was really cool because I got to learn things that I never knew before, such as details about the medics and parachute regiments.

I’m very excited to see the wolves, because ever since I was little I really liked wolves.

I’m looking forward to visiting Yaquina Head, because I want to see the light house, and the land mark and learn about why it’s so important and significant.
