It has been about 2 months since we left Spain after finally getting a sponsor and a crew. Everyone in the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria are exhausted. Fortunately, my compass shows that land is very near, and I can see it as well. It has been a long and stressful journey, since we were going head-to-head with the Portuguese, but finally we have found new land to claim in the name of Spain.

It’s an island probably off the coast of India, and there are several others too. I’m going to dock and row to land to see if the new land has gold and treasure to bring back.

Today we encountered the Natives that live on this island. They brought us parrots, balls of cotton, spears, and many other things, which they exchanged for glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned.
They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features. They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They would make fine servants. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.
